A.M. Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Saturday
Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Mixed forecast: The Martin Luther King Jr. three-day weekend looks mostly dry in Sacramento, although not exactly sunny. A weak weather system is expected to brush Northern California on Sunday, bringing clouds and a 20 percent chance of rain. The National Weather Service forecast goes like this: partly sunny today, mostly cloudy Sunday and mostly sunny on the anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement leader’s birth.
City seeks to curb smoking: Since California passed a landmark law two decades ago banning smoking in enclosed workplaces, cities and counties have expanded restrictions, and Folsom leaders are now poised to ban smoking in apartments and in outdoor seating of restaurants and bars.
Human touch: Set inside the Holistic Light House wellness center in downtown Roseville, Cuddle Connection is the first cuddling business in the Sacramento region and part of a growing industry across the nation.
He survives: A Rio Linda man had the ride of his life Tuesday after being scooped up by a garbage truck. The man, 49, said he was inside a dumpster in North Highlands looking for his wallet when a garbage truck on its way to the Yolo County landfill made a routine stop to empty the dumpster. The man was tossed inside the compressor of the truck, surviving for hours amid the trash only because the truck didn’t fill up.
Volunteer for MLK Day: Organizations across the country are taking part in the National Day of Service on Monday, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, on the same day of the King federal holiday. According to the federal agency Corporation for National & Community Service, the day calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to the most pressing national problems. There are many volunteering opportunities available in the Sacramento region, as reported by UC Davis and the city of Sacramento.
