Pesty showers stay in forecast
Showers will persist in the Sacramento area Saturday, with thunderstorms possible after 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The day is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high near 65 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts should be between a tenth- and quarter-of-an-inch, but higher amounts are possible if there are thunderstorms, the weather service reports.
Race for the Cure
The 20th annual Race for the Cure, presented by Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Sacramento Valley, begins at 9 a.m. at Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento. According to organizers, $19 million has been granted to local programs for breast cancer service serving 19 counties since the race’s inception. Tour gardens
The 18th annual East Sacramento Garden Tour takes place this weekend. Seven gardens are featured, along with other attractions, including David Lubin Elementary students’ chalk art, a tea garden luncheon, food trucks and an artisan boutique. Participants may begin at any garden, as long as they have a ticket. Maps are provided on each ticket and in the program. Tours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Loomis Art Loop
The 13th annual Loomis Art Loop is a free open studio scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Placer County town. Featured is the work of 16 artists at six locations. Download a map for the tour, read artist profiles and find website links at loomisartloop.com.
Explore Capitol Park trees during tour
The Sacramento Tree Foundation hosts a guided walk with a local expert from 10 a.m. to noon. The tour begins on the north steps of the state Capitol, 1100 L St. The park features many State Champion tree specimens noted for their size, age, and beauty, and includes native trees and many from all around the world. The tour, which is free, takes place rain or shine but participants must register at http://sactree.com/events.
Things to do
▪ The Land Park Volunteer Corps will host a May Park Workday beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet at a base camp in the picnic grounds behind Fairytale Town. Workers will trim, clean, weed, mulch and beautify the park. Call 916-718-3030 for more information.
