Fire extinguisher training offered

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District announced that it will offer free fire extinguisher training to all communities it serves. Two training session are scheduled this week near Camp Smokey at the California State Fair: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to noon Friday. According to a fire district news release, a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency allowed the district to hire three fire inspectors to visit more than 800 residential care facilities in its jurisdiction and provide the fire extinguisher training.

Summer meal at community center

Natomas Unified School District hosts its summer meals celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Road, Sacramento. People of all ages will be served a free barbecue chicken lunch to spotlight the district’s summer feeding program. The event will include cooking demonstrations, a free farmers market, mural painting, a bicycle blender, a photo booth and a performance by musicians from the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera.

Art reception at City Hall

A free reception to open a new art show inside Rancho Cordova City Hall is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 2729 Prospect Park Drive. Visitors can meet local artists and listen to the Rancho Cordova Civic Light Orchestra. The exhibit features all media exploring the subject “Farm to Fork.”

Kids can check out big truck

As part of its Big Trucks Summer series, Roseville invites children to sit behind the wheel of a garbage truck at the Maidu Community Center, 1550 Maidu Drive. The free event features a different truck every week.

  • Lincoln Brewster plays at the Golden 1 Stage at 8 p.m. at the California State Fair, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento. The concert is free with fair admission ($12 for adults, $8 for youths).
  • The free Fair Oaks Concerts in the Park series continues with blues band Matt Rainey & the Dippin’ Sauce headlining from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Village Park, 4238 Main St., Fair Oaks. Go to www.fairoakspark.org and click on “Events” for more information.
