Today in Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Thursday

Sacramento City schools begin classes

It’s the first day of class for students in the Sacramento City Unified School District. Families should be aware that students will start the school year with a shorter day under the district’s new Thursday early-dismissal schedule. The Sacramento Police Department and local school districts remind drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to exercise caution during drop-off and pick-up times near campuses.

Board to discuss campus gun ban

The Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education will consider approving a policy banning firearms on campuses. The proposed policy responds to a new state law that specifies that the holder of a concealed weapons permit must obtain written permission from the superintendent or an administrative designee to bring a gun on campus. The Sacramento district currently does not allow individuals other than law enforcement to carry guns on campus. Open session begins at 6:30 p.m., Serna Center, 5735 47th Ave., Sacramento.

Expansion plans discussed

The Sacramento Convention Center will host an open house about the renovation of the Community Theater and expansion of the convention center. City staff will also explain how Memorial Auditorium will be modified for one performance season when construction occurs. The open house takes place at 5:30 p.m., Room 103, Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St.

Davis police host meeting

The Davis Police Department will hold a community meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. in the library at Davis High School, 315 W. 14th St. The department seeks residents’ input about traffic, crime reduction and community engagement.
