Crime Q&A: Any arrests in fatal 2001 drive-by shooting on Highway 99?

Q: Was anyone ever charged in the murder of a man named Charles Witherow, who was shot and killed in a vehicle on June 2, 2001 on the 99 freeway at the Fruitridge exit?

Sara Jane, Roseville

A: No arrests have been reported in the drive-by-shooting that killed 20-year-old Charles Andrew Witherow of Sacramento on Highway 99 near Fruitridge Road.

According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Witherow was a passenger in a white 1999 Honda Accord driven by Loc Huynh, then 21, of Citrus Heights. They were northbound on Highway 99 about 1 a.m. when a vehicle pulled up alongside the Honda and someone fired into the car as they approached Fruitridge Road. Both Witherow and Huynh were shot.

The Honda was struck by several other vehicles and erupted in flames in the resulting crash. Huynh escaped from the car with gunshot wounds and severe burns, but Witherow died at the scene.

Police said at the time that there were no witnesses to the shooting and no suspects.

In November 2002, Sacramento police, members of the Sund-Carrington Foundation and a representative of Witherow’s family announced a $5,000 reward in the hope it would elicit information to help solve the case.
