Man arrested in Placerville bank robbery
The Placerville Police Department arrested a man suspected of robbing a local bank Friday afternoon.
Police received a 911 call of a robbery at the El Dorado Savings Bank on Ray Lawyer Drive at around 6:41 p.m. An employee told dispatchers that a white man had walked into the bank and demanded money from a teller, according to the press release.
The teller gave the man a unknown amount of money in a bag and he later fled on foot in an unknown direction, according to police. The suspect description was immediately relayed to Placerville Police Department officers as well as deputies in the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Within minutes of the 911 call, a sheriff’s deputy saw a man walking in the area of the El Dorado County Fair & Event Center, according to police. The man, identified as John James Pond, 57, put his hands in the air and was held at gunpoint until Placerville police officers arrived and detained him.
According to police, Pond told officers both when he was being detained and during the on-scene investigation that he had robbed the bank and had stolen money on him. The cash was recovered by officers.
Pond, a Placerville resident, was transported to the Placerville Police Department, where he also admitted to the robbery, according to the press release. He was later booked into the El Dorado County Jail.
