Crime Q&A: Has man been tried for fatal shooting on Alta Arden Expressway?

Q: What ever happened to the case of Joe Miles? Did he go to trial?

Sammatha, Sacramento

A: Joe Miles remains in Sacramento County Jail charged with murder in the September 2014 shooting death of 25-year-old Marquelle Jones on the Alta Arden Expressway.

A mistrial in Miles’ case was declared in April, according to Sacramento Superior Court records available online, and his next court date is set for Nov. 4.

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded Sept. 9, 2014, to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Alta Arden Expressway, near Ethan Way in the Arden Arcade area. Jones, who apparently had been driving, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the roadway median, sheriff’s officials said. Jones was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sacramento Bee reported that Jones had helped prosecutors establish a motive behind the fatal Dec. 14, 2010, shootout at Fly Cuts & Styles on Stockton Boulevard, identifying defendant Louis Mitchell as having robbed him of his gold grill teeth jewelry, $40 and an eighth of an ounce of marijuana a week or so before the gun battle.

Monique Nelson, 30, was struck by a stray bullet and killed while protecting her 2-year-old son. Another man who participated in the shooting, Marvion Barksdale, 20, also was killed and four other innocent people as well as a gunman who accompanied Barksdale were injured.

Jones testified at the barbershop trial, but detectives said they did not believe there was a connection between Jones’ court testimony and his death.
