A 77-year-old woman was found stabbed to death Monday in her west Elk Grove home, and police are questioning her husband in connection with the killing.

Elk Grove police were called about 12:40 p.m. by a man inside the house in the 4600 block of Laguna West Way to say a woman had been stabbed and was possibly dead, said Elk Grove police spokesman Christopher Trim.

Officers found the woman’s body in the home and detained her husband, Trim said.

“We believe we have the person responsible for the homicide,” Trim said, calling the probe an active homicide investigation. A motive remains unknown.

Another family member in the home was detained, but was not believed to have been involved in the attack, Trim said.

Police sealed off the block near Laguna Boulevard and Santorini Drive with cruisers and crime tape and stationed two community service officers near the front door of the home. Meanwhile, investigators awaited a search warrant Monday afternoon to enter the house, retrieve the body for Sacramento County coroner’s officials and continue their investigation.

The streets here are quiet, neighbor Rose Munoz said. “Everybody sticks to themselves,” she said.

Angel Rodriguez, who lives across the street from the couple’s home, said this couple did the same, tending to their garden, picking fruit and sticking to themselves since moving into the home.

A few doors down, Shirley Darnell had just learned of the woman’s death. Darnell said the husband and wife she called “Uncle” and “Auntie,” had moved a few months ago into the Laguna West Way home owned by a younger daughter. Days earlier, the woman stopped at Darnell’s doorstep to bring a gift of food to mark the Lunar New Year.

“I can’t believe it was her,” Darnell said. “She was a nice lady, very nice. How sad.”
