Crime Q&A: What happened to man convicted of trying to kill wife with dumbbell?

Q: In the mid 1990s, a man called Marty Kuwabara tried to kill his wife while in a drug-induced frenzy. He was convicted and imprisoned, but I’m not sure for how long. Is he still in the California prison system?

Curious, Folsom

A: Martin Kuwabara was convicted in 1994 of attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury on his wife. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Now 56 years old, Kuwabara is in Folsom State Prison.

On July 19, 1993, Kuwabara attacked his wife with a 10-pound steel dumbbell because he suspected her of being unfaithful, according to a story in The Sacramento Bee. He then dumped her into an Elk Grove ditch, choked her and left her for dead.

In sentencing Kuwabara, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Jeffrey L. Gunther said it was the most heinous crime that he had seen in 10 years on the bench.
