Sacramento homes are being burglarized by men claiming to be utility workers, police said.

The men are working a well-worn trick in which the resident is distracted while others burglarize the home.

The scam begins with a knock on the door and culprits purporting to be city of Sacramento or utility workers needing to check on backyard water or sewer lines.

As the resident accompanies a phony worker to the backyard, accomplices slip in the unlocked front door and steal from the home.

Men working the burglary scheme were described as white or Hispanic, one being short and about 170 pounds and the other tall and heavyset.

Both wore hard hats. The burglars are said to be driving a white truck with an orange light on the roof.
