An unidentified driver died early Saturday after crashing into a pole at Fruitridge and Power Inn roads while trying to evade Sacramento police officers, according to police authorities.

Officers were on patrol when they saw a speeding vehicle, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release. The officers tried to catch up, the release said, but the driver evaded them.

A short while later, at 1:12 a.m., authorities responded to a car crash at Fruitridge and Power Inn roads. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on preliminary evidence, investigators from the department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit said they think the driver was speeding westbound on Fruitridge Road when he veered into a traffic signal pole, according to the release.

The crash remains under investigation. The driver’s identity, age, and make of vehicle were not available Saturday morning.
