Q: Was anyone convicted for the 2010 killing at Second Saturday on J Street?
A: No arrests were reported in the Sept. 12, 2010, shooting that killed 24-year-old Victor Hugo Perez Zavala and wounded three other people following Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk.
The shooting occurred about 12:13 a.m., a couple of hours after the Art Walk ended.
Zavala, a Sacramento City College student, was killed in gang crossfire, according to stories in The Sacramento Bee. He was one of about 200 people who were milling around near the intersection of 18th and J streets when shots rang out. Officers were patrolling the block at the time, but they weren’t able to spot those responsible because of the large number of people in the area.
Police targeted members of the gangs they believed were involved in the shooting in traffic stops and probation searches, but a month after the shooting, they reported no new leads in the investigation.
Zavala was described as an innocent bystander. The first in his family to go to college, he was not in a gang and had held gang-prevention workshops at local schools.
