A California prison inmate has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a 2013 attack on a correctional officer.
Lafonzo Ray Turner, 42, was convicted by a Sacramento County jury of battery on a custodial officer with an enhancement for great bodily injury, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release. He was sentenced Wednesday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Eugene Balonon.
Turner was an inmate at California State Prison, Sacramento, in Folsom. On Sept. 14, 2013, he became disruptive in the visiting room. His visit was terminated and he was instructed by a correctional official to return to the prison yard. Turner refused and struck the officer in the left eye, causing an orbital fracture and concussion, authorities said. Turner continued to attack the victim until other officers arrived.
Turner was serving sentence 50 years to life for a 2007 murder with a firearm conviction.
