Power has been restored to thousands of people after a car crash knocked it out in Elk Grove on Sunday morning.
Electricity was cut for nearly 14,000 SMUD customers in parts of Elk Grove and at Sacramento Executive Airport when a car careened into a power pole at Franklin Boulevard and Bassett Way. The crash happened about 8:15 a.m., SMUD spokesman Chris Capra said, affecting customers in the areas of Cosumnes River College, Courtland, Florin and Laguna, as well as Sacramento Executive Airport.
Bu in about an hour, SMUD crews had restored power to virtually all customers, Capra said.
The car's driver, who was not immediately identified, crashed into the power pole and snapped it irreparably. It will need to be replaced, Capra said.
On a clear, sunny day, it could take a replacement crew up to six hours to replace a power pole.
“It’s a mini construction project,” Capra said.
