Two people died in a house fire early Friday morning in Nevada County after a mother called authorities to say her son was trapped inside the home.
The fire, reported about 4 a.m. Friday, occurred at a home in the 17000 block of Country Circle, located to the west of Nevada City near Highway 49 and Indian Flat Road.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two people were dead. A woman called 911 and said her adult son was trapped in the burning residence, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.
Deputies were the first to arrive on the scene. However, due to intense heat and clouds of smoke, they were unable to enter the home. Firefighters later made entry into the burning house and two bodies were removed.

A sheriff’s press release did not say if the two killed in the blaze were the mother and her son. “Further attempts at identification will be made during the investigative process,” the release said.
It is not known if foul play was involved, officials said. Investigators from the Sheriff-Coroner’s Office and the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District are sifting through evidence.
