Sacramento police issued 90 citations, impounded two cars and arrested one man while responding to a “sideshow” that raced across the city and county Saturday night.
Officers had advance word that a sideshow would take place on the 5900 block of Palm Drive in Carmichael, said Sacramento police Officer Matthew McPhail. At least 100 cars were involved in the incident, where they spun in circles, burned rubber and drag-raced. Officers chased a driver down National Avenue after he fled. After a third of a mile, the driver lost control of his car and was arrested, McPhail said.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter kept tabs on the sideshow as drivers weaved in and out of law enforcement jurisdictions, McPhail said. Twenty-two officers from Sacramento police and the CHP were involved in the pursuit.
By 1 a.m., participants moved to a parking lot on the 8000 block of Folsom Boulevard. Officers blocked the driveways, trapping the cars, and wrote 90 citations for reckless driving, which carries a maximum fine of $500.
