A driver was killed Sunday night and his passenger seriously injured when his truck flipped and rolled on southbound Highway 99 near Elverta Road just north of Sacramento.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the Toyota pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed and was recklessly passing other vehicles when the truck’s driver ran off the right shoulder and lost control about 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
The truck rolled at least once and ended up on its roof.
Other drivers on Highway 99 stopped and tried to assist the driver and his passenger. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.

No other details were available late Sunday as CHP officers continued to investigate.
