Old City Hall was broken into by a man who made it to the second floor of the building but did not steal anything, police said.

Officers responded to the former site of City Council meetings, 915 I St., at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday for a burglary in progress. Police said that Alex Jonathan Fort, 27, forcibly entered the building and continued to the second floor.

There, Fort allegedly attempted to enter an office. Although the intruder caused damage, he was not successful in entering the office, police said.

Officers arrived and surrounded the building. Fort exited the old municipal headquarters and was taken into custody, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and burglary.
