Alexander Lopez will get a new attorney and an Aug. 10 court date in the shooting death last week of a Florin Road gas station attendant as the hunt continues for a pair of brothers also believed to be tied to the killing.
Lopez, 40, faces a murder charge in the fatal July 25 shooting of Simranjit Singh, 20, outside a Chevron gas station at 8498 Florin Road after an alleged attack on one of Singh’s co-workers. Lopez, who appeared briefly Thursday before visiting Sacramento Superior Court Judge Joseph Orr, is being held without bail at Sacramento County Main Jail.
Sacramento County public defender’s attorneys Thursday turned away the case, citing an overload, and handed it to criminal conflict attorneys ahead of the scheduled Aug. 10 date in Sacramento Superior Court.
The hearing for Lopez came as authorities continue to search for brothers Rodolfo Zavala, 23, and Ramon Zavala, 15. Authorities took the unusual step of naming the underage Ramon Zavala citing the potential for danger he posed to the public.

Authorities suspect the younger Zavala fired the shots that killed Singh and say the brothers may have fled for Mexico and their father’s ranch in Guanajuato state. But Sacramento County sheriff’s officials also said the brothers’ location remained unclear and they could still be in the Sacramento area.
