What to do if you’ve been in a car accident
The Sacramento Police Department seeks the public’s help in identifying a sedan driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash with a motorcyclist that took place Wednesday night near the eastbound off-ramp to Interstate 80 at Norwood Avenue.
The department provided these details in a news release:
At 10:26 p.m., police responded to calls of an injury collision involving a motorcycle. When officers arrived, they found a motorcycle and a rider in the roadway. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the motorcyclist as Shane Beachell, 42. No city of residence was listed.
Police said that during the investigation, it was determined that Beachell was southbound on Norwood Avenue splitting lanes when it entered the off-ramp intersection against a red light. The motorcycle collided with the left side of a white BMW sedan as the motorist was exiting the freeway while making a northbound turn onto Norwood through a green light.
The BMW driver stopped momentarily but continued northbound on Norwood at a high rate of speed, police said. The car, a 3 or 5 series model, may have driver’s side damage and may have had more than one occupant, police said.
Anyone who has information about the driver or vehicle that fled the scene is asked to call the department’s Hit-and-Run Tip line at 916-808-6030, dispatch center at 916-264-5471, or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357 or submit an anonymous tip using the free “P3 Tips” smartphone app. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
