Man who died in American River over weekend identified

A man whose body was pulled from the American River on Sunday has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Brian Hazel, 21, of Roseville.

Hazel went missing after swimming in the river with a family member at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said.

After Hazel was reported missing Saturday night to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, deputies searched with helicopters and boats until 1:30 a.m. and again Sunday morning, according to Metro Fire, which helped with the search.

Fire officials found Hazel dead in the water downriver from the San Juan Rapids without a life jacket, the fire department said.

The coroner’s office classified Hazel’s death as an accident.
