Bystanders rescued an elderly couple Wednesday night in Fairfield after the man took a wrong turn onto some railroad tracks.
Fairfield firefighters reported on Facebook that bystanders pulled the couple from the car, which had become stuck on the tracks, before it was struck by a freight train. No one was injured.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at Vanden Road and Canon Road, north of Travis Air Force Base, at 9:23 p.m. to find the couple’s demolished car engulfed in flames, the post said. Vacaville firefighters assisted in the incident.
The driver had mistaken the tracks for Vanden Road and drove onto the tracks, where his vehicle became stuck, the post said.
