A Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman said at the time that detectives were puzzled by the events surrounding the death.
Lee was speaking on the phone with his sister at 11:30 p.m., when he was attacked. His sister heard the commotion and then the phone went dead.
Lee’s father and girlfriend went to Lee’s ground-floor apartment, where they found the front door open and no one inside, sheriff’s officials said. They searched around the yard and found Lee’s body between two apartment buildings.
Sheriff’s officials said at the time that there was no obvious motive for the shooting, although robbery was a possibility.
