A man suspected of sexually assaulting an older woman in her Citrus Heights home Thursday morning has been taken into custody.
Police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Dustin Smith who lives near the residence where the assault occurred. A search warrant was obtained for Smith’s house, and investigators located evidence during the search that linked him to the sexual assault, according to a Police Department news release. He was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of rape, burglary, elder abuse and oral copulation.
Officers responded to a 911 call about 6:30 a.m. Thursday from an older woman who reported that she had been sexually assaulted in her home in the 7100 block of Wonner Way by a man she did not know. The man had left on foot.
Although the woman had no visible signs of trauma, officers were able to confirm that the sexual assault had occurred, the news release said.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the man entered the house through an open window.
Patrol officers and detectives canvassed the neighborhood, interviewing people and collecting video from nearby residences, which provided leads, the news release said. They also released a composite sketch of the suspect.
Police Chief Ronald Lawrence in a written statement praised the victim for her courage, saying she “demonstrated tremendous strength to help us identify this suspect.”
