Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: What happened to man accused of battery against former CalPERS board member?

Q: What was the disposition of the case against Clarence I. Munson, who was connected to the death of Chuck Valdes in September 2014?

Lenotta, Bakersfield

A: Clarence Irdell Munson is charged with battery, corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant and elder abuse stemming from an Aug. 24 incident involving 74-year-old Charles P. Valdes, who died Sept. 2.

Munson’s next court date is scheduled April 29, according to Sacramento Superior Court online records.

Valdes served for two decades on California Public Employees’ Retirement System board, which manages the pension fund. He retired in January 2010 and was later named in court records as a figure in the alleged bribery scheme to direct CalPERS funds into a private equity account controlled by former board member Alfred Villalobos.

According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Valdes was named in a civil case as accepting bribes, but he was never criminally charged. Villalobos died in an apparent suicide after shooting himself Reno gun range in January.
