A fire burned half the playground at Riverbank Elementary in West Sacramento on Thursday.
The fire broke out at the school, 1100 Carrie St., early Thursday evening, partially destroying the plastic and metal play structure. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but not before the playground sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage.
On Friday, school district work crews began cleaning up the playground area and placing temporary fencing between the charred area and the playground structure that did not burn.
Students were on spring break this week. When students return next week, they will be able to play on the unburned half of the playground, a Washington Unified School District official said Friday.
