One person died and two others were injured Thursday afternoon when a vehicle on Highway 49 in Nevada County drifted into oncoming traffic.
The collision occurred about 2:20 p.m. near Combie Road, west of Lake of the Pines. California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Mike Steele said two vehicles were involved, a Mercury Grand Marquis and a smaller gold pickup.
He said the Grand Marquis was northbound and was reported being driven erratically before the collision. The driver drifted into the southbound lanes, where the vehicle collided with the southbound pickup, Steele said.
One occupant of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

Steele said the other occupant of the pickup and the driver of the Grand Marquis were taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. No information was available on the severity of their injuries.
The collision resulted in moderate traffic congestion on Highway 49, which remained partially open during the investigation of the crash, with officers providing traffic control. Steele said the highway was fully reopened at 4:10 p.m.
