A Sacramento police officer slammed his patrol SUV into a pickup truck early Thursday while chasing a suspect near Fruitridge Road.
The officer hit the truck at 2:50 a.m. while driving east along the 12th Avenue overpass above Highway 99. He was attempting to provide backup to other units as they pursued the suspect, who Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Linda Matthew said had fled a traffic stop.
The suspect tossed what appeared to be a bag containing narcotics to people waiting outside a house on Fruitridge Road as he drove by, Matthew said. He then pulled over and stopped about 30 yards ahead at the Mendocino Boulevard intersection.
Police found scales and cocaine in the suspect’s car. He was arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession and evading arrest, Matthew said.

The officer reported pain from the crash and was taken to a local hospital, though he has since been released. The truck driver declined medical treatment, Matthew said.
The Police Department plans to review the officer’s dashcam video, Matthew said.
