Authorities are investigating a fatal collision between a vehicle and a woman pushing a shopping cart Tuesday morning on El Camino Avenue, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

The woman was pushing the cart down El Camino Avenue near Connie Drive when she was struck by a Nissan sedan about 6:30 a.m., Lt. Paul Freeman said. The driver was initially thought to be fleeing the scene, but made a U-turn and called in the crash.

The victim, whom Freeman described as a possible transient in her mid-50s, was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. The Nissan’s windshield was smashed on the passenger side.

The sidewalk near the collision is about 4 feet wide and partially obstructed by a utility tower. Freeman said the woman may have stepped off the sidewalk and into “moderate-to-heavy” rush-hour traffic.

El Camino Avenue was shut down from eastbound Interstate 80 to Ethan Way until late morning.
