Stockton police officers shot and killed a suspect they say charged them with a knife on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called out to the 8700 block of Deer Creek Circle around 3:45 p.m. on reports that a man was trying to run over people with a vehicle. Stockton police say he struck one person, who is in the hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect continued to drive and struck several other parked vehicles in the neighborhood, police said. The suspect then exited his vehicle armed with a knife. When Stockton officers arrived, the suspect failed to comply with verbal orders to drop the knife, and then he charged. In an attempt to stop him, officers shot the suspect with less-than-lethal bean bag rounds, which had no effect. When the suspect continued toward them, two officers drew their duty weapons and shot him.

Medics arrived and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. The involved officers were not injured.

The incident is under investigation.
