An oven fire shut down production Tuesday afternoon at a midtown Safeway’s bakery department.

The fire began about1:10 p.m. at 1025 Alhambra Blvd. but was contained to the oven and stovetop, said Chris Harvey, Sacramento Fire Department spokesman. Employees put it out with a hood extinguishing system as firefighters raced to the scene.

“We’re talking about a very small fire, just a range-top cooking fire here,” Harvey said. “The initial report of it being something larger turned out to be false.”

Food service will be suspended while the bakery is cleaned. There were no injuries or structural damage, Harvey said. No cause to the fire had been identified as of 2 p.m. Tuesday.
