A 59-year-old Roseville woman died Saturday evening when the car she was riding in tumbled through a ditch south of Grass Valley.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was riding in the front passenger seat of a 1992 Geo Metro headed west on Alta Sierra Drive when the car sped around a curve near Francis Drive and went airborne into a four-foot culvert at about 5:55 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Neither the woman nor the driver, 50-year-old Newcastle resident Eric Day, were wearing seat belts. She was thrown across Day’s seat and partially through the driver’s side window, and was trapped on the vehicle’s left exterior as it rolled down the culvert.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene after unsuccessful CPR attempts.

Alcohol was determined to be a factor in the crash and Day, who slipped out through the Geo’s rear hatch with minor injuries, was arrested. He had been released from Nevada County Jail as of noon Monday.
