Two men were arrested for burglary of a downtown shoe store – one of them two hours after he had been released from jail.
Sacramento police responded to the burglary in the 600 block of K Street about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Officers found evidence at the scene and along a path away from the store that apparently was dropped by the thieves.
Police said that they caught up with Francis Smith, 45, and Jacob Sargent, 32, at Sixth Street and Capitol Mall in possession of stolen property from the burglary. It was then that they noticed that Smith had been released from jail less than two hours prior to the burglary.
Police spokesman Sgt. Doug Morse said Smith had been arrested on suspicion of theft at 6:27 p.m. Wednesday after he was accused of taking a couch and loveseat from a Rent-a-Cener on Northgate Boulevard. He allegedly had dragged them away from the store and down the street, where he was seen by police.
