Man held in deadly North Highlands slashing faces Monday court date

The man held in the deadly slashing of a North Highlands woman this week will be arraigned Monday in Sacramento Superior Court.

Juan V. Avalos, 28, is being held without bail in Sacramento County Jail. He is suspected of killing Nichole Riolo, 32, of North Highlands late Wednesday, slashing her throat from behind. Deputies say Riolo did not know her attacker.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies say Avalos was walking in the roadway on Watt Avenue as Riolo drove south, catching the woman’s attention.

Investigators were unsure whether Riolo’s car clipped Avalos as she passed or whether Avalos threw something at the car, said sheriff’s officials. But deputies said Avalos became belligerent when Riolo stopped her car to approach him, then attacked her as she walked back to the car.

Witnesses told deputies the man ran from the scene as Riolo made her way to a parking lot in the 7400 block of Watt where she died moments later.
