Ricky J. Nelson, 40, died Saturday night when he was struck by a car while bicycling on Highway 160, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Sacramento County coroner identified Nelson on Sunday morning. CHP Officer Chad Hertzell said Nelson was riding northbound on the right shoulder of Highway 160 where it crosses the American River at 10:30 p.m. when he was struck.
He attempted to cross the highway to take the left lane exit for Del Paso Boulevard directly in front of a Lexus sedan going approximately 55 miles per hour in the left lane, Hertzell said. The driver didn’t see Nelson until the last moment and couldn’t stop the car.
Nelson was ejected from the bike onto the highway and was hit by a Ford SUV traveling behind the Lexus, Hertzell said. Nelson was declared dead at the scene by Sacramento Metro Fire personnel.

The drivers of the Ford and the Lexus remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither is suspected of driving under the influence and no charges will be filed, Hertzell said.
