The California Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses to a fatal collision that occurred early Sunday morning south of Oroville.
A 2003 Chevy Tahoe pickup, believed to be driven by Lovie Shorter of Oroville, was eastbound on Las Plumas Avenue about 1:38 a.m., approaching Lower Wyandotte Road. At the same time, a 2013 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by 65-year-old Laurence Jeska of Oroville was northbound on Lower Wyandotte Road, approaching the Plumas Avenue intersection. Shorter’s vehicle ran a red light and the two vehicles struck each other broadside in the intersection, according to a CHP news release.
Jeska, the only occupant of the Tacoma, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Shorter and his passenger, Pamela Bochantin, suffered minor injuries. Shorter was contacted by officers at the collision scene and subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter, the news release said.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and the CHP is seeking any witnesses who may have arrived at the scene before emergency personnel got there. The CHP is aware of at least one witness driving a four-door pickup truck who was seen in surveillance video stopping in the Robinson’s Market parking lot next to Shorter’s Chevrolet Tahoe. This witness is asked to call the Oroville CHP office at 530-538-2700 to provide a short statement.
