A man was fatally shot Sunday night in an apartment complex near Rio Linda Boulevard in the South Hagginwood neighborhood.
Police responded to a 911 call of a shooting at around 9:43 p.m. on the 900 block of Eleanor Avenue to find a man in his 30s bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a media release from the Sacramento Police Department.
Several residents of the Westwind Apartments, where the shooting took place, described hearing five gunshots in quick succession before police and medical personnel arrived. None wanted to provide their full names to The Sacramento Bee in fear of retaliation.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts, prompting homicide detectives to come to the apartment complex, police said.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office had yet to release the victim’s identity as of Monday morning, though multiple neighbors said the victim was likely not a resident at the Westwind Apartments. His body was found at the back of the property, where a paper evidence ruler was left nearby on the ground. Empty cigarette boxes and wrappers littered the area.
A woman who identified herself as a property manager declined to comment. No motive for the shooting has been determined, police said.
Witnesses with information regarding the homicide are encouraged to contact the dispatch center at 916-264-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP, or submit an anonymous tip using the “P3 Tips” smartphone app. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
