A report of children trapped in an apartment fire turned out to be unfounded Thursday in Fair Oaks.
When Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters arrived at the burning downstairs apartment near Fair Oaks and Sunrise boulevards about 8 a.m. they were told that two children were inside.
However, it turned out that nobody was the home at the time the fire began. A neighbor had called 911 to report hearing a smoke alarm sounding.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the apartment, which sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage. Cause of the fire, which appears to have started in the kitchen, is under investigation.
