Update: Police shoot man armed with knife in downtown Sacramento

A man armed with a knife was shot by Sacramento police Thursday evening in the 900 block of I Street.

At 6:13 p.m., a woman flagged down bicycle officers in Cesar Chavez Plaza, saying a family member was acting irrationally, said Sgt. Doug Morse, Sacramento police spokesman. When officers approached the man, he produced a knife. An officer, fearing for his safety, shot the man, who police said is white and in his 20s.

Morse said the man was alert and talking and is being treated at an area hospital.

Detectives and crime scene investigators remained on the scene Thursday night.
