A man who stole a Sacramento County Probation Department SUV while he was under arrest was apprehended Tuesday night.

The suspect, Larry James Brookshire, 40, was apprehended by officials in a North Sacramento apartment complex shortly after 7 p.m., according to probation department Assistant Chief Deputy Coleen Kincheloe.

Brookshire was arrested by probation officers about 11:45 a.m. and placed in the back of the department’s Ford Explorer. Within minutes he had maneuvered his way into the front seat, stealing the SUV and driving off, according to a news release issued by the department.

Shortly afterward, Brookshire left the Explorer on the 3200 block of Truxel Road and fled on foot, according to the release.

Officials searching the area of the theft found methamphetamine and information relating to identity theft, Kincheloe said.

Jefferson Elementary and Bannon Creek Elementary were temporarily placed on lockdowns as a precaution, according to the release.

Brookshire, who was on post release community supervision for a prior firearm possession charge, is being held at the Sacramento County jail, according to Kincheloe.
