Spilled milk made a big mess for Memorial Day motorists on Highway 99.

A truck carrying more than 12 tons of filled milk cartons overturned on the 47th Avenue offramp from Highway 99 shortly before 9 a.m., closing the freeway’s northbound lanes.

The lanes, offramp and eastbound 47th Avenue reopened by 3:15 p.m, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Both CHP and Sacramento Fire Department crews responded to the scene, scattered with single-serving size cartons and white rivers of milk. Fire crews helped offload the remaining milk before the truck could be towed.
