Davis man who killed his 14-month old son in 1994 denied parole, DA says

Manuel Bermudez, who killed his 14-month old son in 1994, was denied parole after a hearing Thursday, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office. Bermudez, now 48, was a Davis resident at the time of the murder.

In November 1994, a Yolo County jury convicted Bermudez of murder and child abuse as a result of the death of his 14-month-old son, Emanuel Bermudez, according to a press release from the District Attorney’s Office.

According to previous reporting by The Sacramento Bee, Emanuel’s mother told police that he had been beaten for six to eight weeks before his death.

Preliminary autopsy reports showed that Emanuel suffered massive brain hemorrhaging, a ruptured kidney and other massive internal injuries. Authorities said any of those injuries could have caused his death, according to previous reporting by the Bee.

Emanuel’s mother was arrested at the time of his death for child endangerment.

Bermudez was arrested in 1993 for spousal abuse, but his wife refused to press charges, according to The Bee.

Yolo County Deputy District Attorney Larry Barlly, who prosecuted the murder in 1994, argued Thursday that Bermudez should remain in jail, according to the release.

In denying parole, the Board of Parole hearing commissioners “noted the severity of the crime, Bermudez’s lack of remorse, empathy, or understanding as to what led up to the crime or how to address those issues, and the risk of danger his release would present to the public,” the release said.

Bermudez will be eligible for parole again in five years, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
