Caught on video: Thieves smash truck into Rancho Cordova gas station, drag away ATM

Rancho Cordova police and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department are looking for multiple suspects in the smash-and-grab burglary of a gas station ATM and a similar failed attempt nearby, authorities said Thursday.

At least two suspects used a red pickup truck about 4 a.m. Thursday to smash through windows of a liquor store in the 10400 block of Folsom Boulevard and then a Chevron station about a half-mile away, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Shaun Hampton said.

At both spots, suspects backed the pickup truck through window storefronts.

The liquor store smash-and-grab attempt broke the exterior glass, but the store’s interior was protected by metal bar reinforcement, Hampton said.

The ATM burglary at the Chevron station, in the 10100 block of Folsom Boulevard, occurred “minutes later,” Hampton said.

“They were able to hook a strap to the ATM machine and successfully pull it from its pedestal,” Hampton said.

The burglars secured the ATM in their truck and fled the scene, according to Hampton.

The incidents were captured on surveillance video, which police were gathering. Due to the similar nature of the crimes and suspect descriptions, police are confident the crimes are linked, Hampton said.

“I can’t remember the last (ATM burglary) we’ve had in the city of Rancho Cordova, but we do see it in the region,” Hampton said.

Rancho Cordova Police Department is staffed by contract with county sheriff’s deputies.

Anyone with information regarding the crimes is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Department or call 911.
