A West Sacramento police officer died in South Carolina on Saturday after battling lymphoma.

Rinaldo “Monty” Monterrosa died while in Charleston for police general training, according to West Sacramento Police Department spokesman Eric Angle.

Angle said Charleston police believe Monterrosa died of natural causes, and are investigating the incident.

Monterrosa had just returned to work after a yearlong battle with lymphoma, according to a statement from the West Sacramento Police Department, and had served the department for 11 years. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

“We know that Officer Monterrosa made some great relationships across the city,” the statement said. “Thank you Monty for all that you gave to everyone you served over your impactful life. You were truly a gift to those who had the pleasure to work alongside you.”

Monterrosa was survived by a wife and four children, according to the statement. Angle said Monterrosa’s family has not yet planned any memorial services.
