Scammers are using Auburn police telephone number to convince people they owe money

Scammers are using a new way to target people in the Sacramento area: phone calls from the Auburn Police Department.

The department announced in a news release Tuesday that a scammer is calling people to tell them that they may have warrants out for their arrest and owe money to the department.

“We want everyone to be very clear, APD WILL NEVER CALL YOU AND ASK FOR MONEY OR TELL YOU YOU HAVE WARRANTS, these are scam calls and please do not give them any information or do what they are asking,” the release said.

These scammers will attempt to persuade phone call recipients not to hang up or call back, the department said. If it is a legitimate call from the Auburn Police Department, a recipient can hang up and call dispatch to check its legitimacy.

Anyone who has been a victim of this scam is encouraged to call the department at 530-0823-4237 and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission here.
