A man who was trying to swim across a pond with a heavy rock apparently drowned at an Oroville wildlife area.
The California Highway Patrol said that Austin Harr, 21, of Gridley was attempting to swim across the dredger pond at the Oroville Wildlife Area on Monday afternoon while holding a rock estimated to weigh about 10 pounds.
At one point, Harr went under the water and did not emerge. His friends became alarmed and called for help.
At about 5:50 p.m., Harr’s body was found. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:46 p.m. Monday.

Alcohol is thought to have played a role in Harr’s death, according to a CHP news release. Monday was Harr’s 21st birthday.
