A suspected pipe bomb that shut down traffic and forced evacuations near 29th and H streets Wednesday turned out to be nothing more than an empty, 36-inch plastic PVC pipe, Sacramento police said.
Workers with the California Department of Transportation first reported the pipe as a suspicious device around 11:13 a.m. Sacramento police deployed bomb squad units and within two hours cleared the scene after X-raying the pipe with a robot, according to Officer Justin Brown, a department spokesman.
“It was sitting 2 to 3 feet off the roadway on a grassy area on 29th Street, between H and I,” Brown said.
Police are not seeking any suspects in the case and said there is no connection to previous pipe bombs placed on area freeways over the past few months.

“This was just a piece of PVC pipe that was overlooked and left in the area,” Brown said.
