A motorist died early Friday when his car left Highway 99 in the Elk Grove area and crashed into a tree.
The California Highway Patrol said that the man, believed to be in his 30s, was southbound on Highway 99 south of Elk Grove Boulevard about 1 a.m. when his Toyota Yaris left the roadway and hit a tree along the highway.
A witness to the crash attempted to get the driver out of the car, but damage to the vehicle and fire prevented his rescue attempt. Arriving firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The identity of the driver has not been released, pending notification of family.
