72-year-old pedestrian killed in Carmichael crash involving teen driver, CHP says

A 72-year-old pedestrian was killed and another was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle Friday morning in Carmichael, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The driver was a 16-year-old girl heading westbound on Arden Way when she swerved to the right for unknown reasons and hit two elderly women walking near the shoulder, CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer Mike Zerfas said. The collision occurred near the 5500 block of Arden Way, a residential area, just after 9:30 a.m., Zerfas said.

Both victims were transported to the hospital, where one died of her injuries and the other is being treated for major injuries, Zerfas said. The victims are both 72-year-old Sacramento women, he said.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with authorities, Zerfas said. The investigation remains active. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the collision.

Identification of the woman who died will be made available by the coroner’s office following notification of family.
