High-speed chase on I-80 from Sacramento to Vacaville ends in arrest, authorities say

A wild chase Monday morning saw police and California Highway Patrol officers pursue a suspect in stolen vehicle from Sacramento to Vacaville, and crystal-clear CHP helicopter video showed the end of it unfold.

The suspect was identified as Albert Aranda, 38, Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Marcus Basquez said Tuesday.

The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m. in the 3900 block of Cypress Street in Del Paso Heights when an officer responding to a different call encountered a suspect wanted for a prior theft, Basquez said.

“They kind of make eye contact, and he takes off in a blue Camaro,” Basquez said.

The driver didn’t stop, and a high-speed chase ensued.

CHP took over the chase as the suspected headed onto Interstate 80, then onto other freeways, county roads and city streets. Video shows the sports car darting across multiple lanes of traffic as well as grass and dirt medians.

“Speeds were pretty high, over 100 (mph) at times,” Basquez said.

Eventually, the suspect ended up driving the wrong way down Interstate 505 near Vacaville, exited the vehicle and fled on foot, video shows.

CHP officers and Vacaville police confronted the suspect, who attempted to hide near parked tractor trailers in a Vacaville industrial complex. The suspect resisted officers, police said; following a struggle, he was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

Aranda is being held in Sacramento County jail, facing three felony relating to the vehicle theft and evading officers, as well as an additional charge of probation violation.

Neither officers nor the suspect were injured in the struggle, CHP’s Golden Gate Division Air Operations said in a Facebook post.

Sacramento Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
